Zenith CHRONOMASTER SOLO SPORT: The Essence of High Frequency
Since 1969, the name “El Primero” has almost inevitably conjured images of chronographs: pushers, counters, high frequencies, and the ability to measure time—all of which have secured ZENITH’s renowned movements a place in the history of modern watchmaking.
57 years later, at the Geneva Watchmaking Days in 2026, Zenith chose to tell this story through three hands.
The new CHRONOMASTER Solo Sport is the first three-hand watch in the collection and features one of the most compelling elements of the El Primero movement: 5 Hz, equivalent to 36,000 vibrations per hour. It features hour, minute, and central seconds hands, and on three of the four models, a date window is located at 3 o’clock.
The name “Solo” itself carries a wealth of information. The chronograph function has disappeared from the dial, but the frequency remains. For a series bearing the “CHRONOMASTER” name on its dial, this is undoubtedly a groundbreaking innovation worthy of our close attention.

El Primero, three hands, 36,000 vibrations per hour. The Solo Sport watch is powered by the El Primero 3620 movement, an in-house automatic movement derived from the 3600 chronograph. It features a silicon escapement, a stop-seconds function, bidirectional winding, and a 60-hour power reserve, while retaining the El Primero series’ signature oscillation frequency.
Here, frequency becomes the focus: the large central seconds dial. Oscillates ten and a half times per second, progressing with exquisite precision on the minute markers—perhaps the simplest and most captivating way to experience the 5Hz movement. No need to start the chronograph: the rhythm of the 3620 movement is clearly discernible every time you check the time.
The choice of mechanical structure makes the Solo Sport more appealing than a simplified version of the CHRONOMASTER. The chronograph function is a hallmark of the El Primero; its high-frequency vibrations have always been at its core. Zenith decided to start with the latter.

This watch features a 40mm stainless steel case with a screw-down crown protected by lugs, and is water-resistant to 20 ATM (200 meters). A unidirectional rotating ceramic bezel surrounds the dial—a new design that plays a decisive role in shaping the new look of the Chronomaster.
The bezel allows for quick measurement of time intervals, making the Solo Sport more functional than its initial three-hand design might suggest. The screw-down crown and 200-meter water resistance give the word “sport” a truly technical connotation—a word often easily attached to a watch’s dial.
There’s also a 40mm version. We love this size and would love to experience it for ourselves. The Solo Sport maintains a robust case, a striking bezel, and crown guards without using an excessively large diameter. Judging from the currently released images, its proportions seem just right; however, whether this is truly the case can only be truly appreciated by wearing it on the wrist.
ZENITH designed the high-frequency circuitry. The 3620 movement sets the tone for the Solo Sport series, and the dial design aims to clearly present this rhythm. A series of 45° angled “Z” patterns are engraved on the ceramic dial, an exclusive design developed specifically for this series by Zenith, intended to graphically represent the rhythm and tempo of high-frequency vibrations.
In close-up, this detail is truly remarkable. The pattern doesn’t dominate the dial: it appears and disappears with the light, creating an interplay of light and shadow. On the white ceramic dial with a sunburst pattern, it appears following the radial reflections of light; while on the glossy black and brown dials, it presents a deeper, more subtle texture.
The dial’s outer edge is adorned with “shark tooth” shaped hour markers, inspired by certain classic Zenith models, their tight spacing complementing the movement of the central hour hand. The balance wheel’s seconds hand is also decorated with the letter “Z”; the applied hour markers and multifaceted hands are coated with Super-LumiNova SLN C1 luminescent material.
Part of the aesthetic appeal lies in the space itself. Without the chronograph sub-dials, we can finally appreciate the design of the ceramic dial from one end to the other, savoring the minute markers and letting the seconds hand bring dynamism to the dial.
Four models are available. One model without a date display has already caught our attention.
This release includes four configurations: the first is a white ceramic dial with a sunburst finish and a black bezel; the second is a glossy black dial with a black bezel; and the third is a brown ceramic dial and bezel. All models feature a date window at 3 o’clock and are priced at €10,500.
Brown is perhaps the most striking color in the photos. This glossy ceramic coating in this hue presents drastically different visual effects under varying lighting conditions, and we were curious to see just how different it would be from the sporty feel of the white and black versions.

There’s also a watch, model number 03.5000.3620/21.M5000. A glossy black case, black bezel, and no date window. We admit: this is the watch we spent the most time admiring. The date window at 3 o’clock is gone, and the Z-shaped pattern flows smoothly across the entire dial, achieving near-perfect symmetry. Even the name “Solo” seems perfectly suited to this design.
ZENCLASP: Subtle Differences, Extraordinary Achievements
This three-link steel bracelet introduces ZENCLASP—a folding clasp launched by ZENITH at Watches & Wonders 2026—to the entire Solo Sport collection.
Worth close examination. It consists of 41 parts, including 10 ceramic balls for the locking and positioning mechanism. The device took three years and approximately 1,800 hours to develop, followed by testing equivalent to over 600,000 opening and closing cycles.
These figures are impressive, but for the wrist, what matters most is the crucial 10 millimeters—the strap’s fine-tuning range, adjustable in 2.5-millimeter increments, tool-free.
The sapphire crystal case back reveals the 3620 caliber movement and the new star-shaped skeletonized rotor—a signature ZENITH feature instantly recognizable when the watch is flipped over.
Upon close examination from both sides, the Solo Sport watch seems even more appealing than its initial design. We don’t feel it lacks anything; rather, we see elements absent in the CHRONOMASTER series. It’s a 40mm three-hand watch, water-resistant to 200 meters, featuring a ceramic case, fine-tuning, and a high-frequency in-house movement. We can easily imagine wearing it every day; despite its more minimalist design, its internal mechanics are anything but ordinary.
We couldn’t wait to experience it for ourselves—to see what the 40mm dial looked like on our wrists, to admire the texture of the brown ceramic in natural light, and to handle the new ZENCLASP buckle. But most importantly, the thing we wanted to do most was watch the second hand tick. For a three-hand watch, this might be the most ordinary thing, but for the El Primero movement that vibrates 36,000 times per hour, it’s extraordinary!
