A key fob that suddenly stops unlocking the car is one of the most common small car problems, and it is often not the fob itself. Before you replace anything, run through these checks.
1. Replace the battery
This is the fix more often than not. Range that slowly gets shorter, or a fob that needs several presses, usually means a weak battery. The battery type is printed on the cell, and most fobs open with a coin or a small flat screwdriver. Cold weather makes a weak battery fail sooner.
2. Try the spare
If the spare fob works, the problem is with the first fob. If neither works, the issue is more likely in the car, such as a weak car battery or a receiver problem.
3. Look for physical damage
Fobs get dropped, sat on and run through the wash. A cracked case, a loose battery contact or water inside can stop it working. Sometimes a new shell solves it; sometimes the electronics are done.
4. Check for interference
Strong radio sources nearby can occasionally block a fob signal. If it works fine in your driveway but not in one particular parking lot, interference is a likely cause.
5. Use the hidden key
Most fobs hide a mechanical key blade inside. Find out now how to release it and which door has the keyhole, which is sometimes under a small cover on the handle. Many push-button start cars also have a spot where a dead fob can still be read; your owner’s manual shows where.
When it needs replacing or reprogramming
If a new battery does not help, or the fob is lost, it will need to be replaced and programmed to the vehicle. Have the year, make, model and VIN ready, along with proof of ownership.
