Late in 2025, a survey of over 1,500 board members and C-suite executives run alongside Protiviti found that what looks like an AI skills shortage in major companies is really a critical thinking shortage. One HR leader on the panel put it bluntly: this gap is more widespread now than during any earlier technology shift, and it’s hitting almost every role, not just IT.

Build the strongest version of the opposite argument. Not the easiest one to knock down the best one. If you can’t argue the other side convincingly, you probably don’t understand your own position as well as you think you do.

Never let one source carry a claim alone. Cross-check numbers and framing across at least two independent sources. It’s the fastest way to catch a stale statistic or a slanted take before it lands in your work.

Write before you feel ready. A rough draft, written early, exposes gaps in your logic that rereading never will. You’ll catch yourself mid-sentence more often than you’d expect.

Question your own draft, not just your sources. After finishing something, ask what you assumed and what would actually change your mind. This kind of self-checking metacognition was one of the strongest predictors of grades in the study mentioned earlier.

Argue positions you don’t hold. Grab a study partner and take opposite sides of something, even a topic you agree on. It forces you to say out loud what you’d normally take for granted.

Interview your own work like a skeptic would. Before submitting anything, ask: why this claim, according to whom, and what’s the strongest evidence against it? This one habit alone catches more weak arguments than any proofread ever will.

Where This Shows Up in Real Coursework

The payoff is clearest in assignments built around applied reasoning rather than recall case studies, recommendations, anything where you have to justify a decision instead of just describing one.
