UPI has made digital payments quick and convenient for millions of users across India. Whether paying bills, shopping online or transferring money to friends and family, transactions can be completed in seconds. However, the growing popularity of UPI has also led to an increase in fraud attempts targeting unsuspecting users.
Many UPI scams rely on misleading messages, fake payment requests or social engineering tactics that trick people into authorising transactions or sharing sensitive information. Understanding how these scams work is the first step towards staying safe.
Why UPI Fraud Is a Growing Concern
Digital payments have become normal for millions of Indians. Especially, UPI is now used by hundreds of millions of people across the country. Indians now rely on UPI for even small payments like buying chips.
But this behaviour is giving rise to UPI scams. The risk is not limited to large transactions. Scammers often start with small amounts to build trust or test whether the user will respond. Once the user follows instructions, the fraudster may push for larger payments.
8 Common UPI Scams Users Should Know
1. Fake collect request scam
This is one of the most common forms of UPI fraud. A scammer sends a collect request and tells the user to enter the UPI PIN to receive money. But entering the PIN approves a payment from the user’s account.
A pin is only required to make a payment, not receive it.
2. QR code payment scam
Fraudsters may send a QR code and claim it is needed for refunds, rewards or payments. When the user scans it and enters the UPI PIN, money gets transferred out.
Some scammers even swap QR codes at stores with fake ones that are linked to their accounts.
This type of payment scam in India is common on resale platforms, rental listings and online marketplaces.
3. Fake customer care scam
Users often search online for customer care numbers of banks, delivery apps, travel sites or e-commerce platforms. Scammers create fake listings and pretend to be support executives. They may ask users to share OTPs, install apps or approve UPI requests.
For digital payment safety, always use customer care details from the official app or website.
4. Screen-sharing app scam
In this scam, the fraudster asks the user to install a screen-sharing or remote access app. Once installed, they can see banking details, OTPs, UPI IDs and transaction activity. They may guide the user into approving a payment while pretending to “fix” an issue.
No genuine bank or payment platform will ask for remote access to your phone.
5. Refund or cashback scam
A scammer may promise cashback, a refund, prize money or even a government benefit. They may send a link or payment request and ask the user to enter the UPI PIN to claim the amount. This is a classic UPI fraud trick because it uses excitement and urgency.
Always verify refunds from the official platform where the original transaction happened.
6. Donation scam
Fraudsters take advantage of emergencies, natural disasters, medical fundraisers or charitable causes by requesting donations through UPI. They may create fake social media posts, impersonate genuine charities or circulate misleading messages asking for urgent financial help.
Users who wish to support a cause may unknowingly transfer money to fraudulent accounts without verifying the authenticity of the campaign.
This method works because scammers exploit emotions, urgency and the desire to help others during difficult situations.
7. Phishing link scam
Fraudsters send links through SMS, email, WhatsApp or social media claiming account updates, KYC verification or failed payment refunds. These links may lead to fake pages that collect banking details or install malware.
8. Impersonation scam
Scammers may pretend to be bank employees, police officers, delivery agents, friends, relatives or company representatives. They create urgency and pressure users into transferring money or approving a UPI request.
If a message asks for immediate payment, pause and verify through a separate trusted channel.
How to Stay Safe from UPI Fraud
Following a few simple rules can save you from falling prey to these digital scams. Pause and think whenever you are dealing with money online for your digital payment safety.
- The first basic rule is to never enter your UPI PIN unless you are intentionally sending money. Your PIN is not required to receive money, verify a refund or update KYC.
- Never share OTPs, card details, passwords or banking information with anyone.
- Avoid scanning QR codes sent by strangers. If someone claims a QR code is needed to receive money, treat it as suspicious.
- Do not install unknown apps suggested by callers. Remote access apps can expose your screen and sensitive information.
- Always verify customer care numbers from official apps or websites. Do not trust numbers found through random search results, social media posts or forwarded messages.
- Keep your phone updated and protected. A secure device reduces the risk of malware, phishing links and data-stealing threats.
- Review transaction details carefully before entering your UPI PIN. Check the receiver name, amount and purpose.
What to Do If You Become a Victim
If you suspect UPI fraud, act immediately. Do not continue talking to the scammer. Take screenshots of chats, transaction IDs, phone numbers, links and payment requests.
Report the transaction to your bank or payment app as soon as possible. RBI advises customers to notify their bank immediately after noticing unauthorised electronic banking transactions, as delay can reduce the chances of protection or recovery.
For financial cyber fraud, call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report the complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Block the scammer immediately, reset important passwords and monitor your bank account for further suspicious activity.
Stay Alert, Stay Protected
UPI has made payments simple, fast and convenient. But users must remember that safety depends on awareness. Most UPI fraud cases do not happen because the technology fails. They happen because scammers manipulate trust, urgency and confusion.
Modern fraud targets payments, identity, devices and everyday online behaviour. With safer habits, trusted cybersecurity protection and better digital payment safety, users can reduce the risk of payment scam incidents in India and use UPI with greater confidence.
